Michael is the Company Secretary and has various administrative responsibilities, including finance and training.

He studied Law at university before becoming a teacher and lecturer for several years. He joined the therapeutic staff at Peper Harow in 1990, working with adolescents with challenging behaviour in a leading therapeutic community. He then joined the Special Hospitals Service Authority in London, as Secretary to the Board, working alongside the Chief Executive in the management of the three special hospitals for mentally disordered offenders: Ashworth, Broadmoor and Rampton.

In 1993, with Jayne Zito, he set up The Zito Trust, a high-profile campaigning organisation focused on the reform of community care mental health services. He was the Director for 15 years and was instrumental in campaigning for the significant reforms to mental health policy which were implemented by various governments, culminating in the Mental Health Act 2009.
